Fairmount

This project, perched in the West Hills, had been a dream in the making for a long time. The design process took several iterations and collaborations to find just the right layout and mix of materials for the client. I was brought in to help coordinate design while the construction was executed by Alpenglow Construction. The customer had recently purchased the home from the original owner, an architect. He built it using innovative techniques and employed the use of simple, rustic materials to create a modern treehouse.  The client wanted to convert an indoor pool room that had been added in the 1980’s into a master bedroom and en suite bathroom. They wanted to capture the light that poured in from the southern transom skylights and the views out of the west facing windows. We married the customers own modern New York style with the existing all wood mid-century modern interior by cladding the master bedroom in vertical grain hemlock to keep the color light, while complementing the cedar interior cladding throughout the rest of the home. We added modern brass fixtures that pop against the deep charcoal antiqued granite slabs on the tub deck and countertops. We eliminated an awkward bedroom in the downstairs and reworked the downstairs bath to create a more open area that could serve as both a family room and guest room.
